Today's wine find is an example of stepping out of your comfort zone and trying something new that you usually overlook..
While prepping for a virtual tasting and looking for accessible wines that people could buy while learning about food and wine pairing, I came across the Deinhard Green Label Riesling from the Mosel. It was accessibly priced and had the flavour profile we were seeking for a sweet and savoury dish. This little Mosel white 'that could' really surprised me for the better, and let's get into why.
About Deinhard
What makes the Deinhard brand so interesting is that it is the oldest wine brand in all of Germany (over 250 years old) and has a history of international distribution to the Americas as early as pre WWI.
At the core of Deinhard's offerings is Riesling, and their flagship Green Label range showcases just that; the best Riesling expressions from the Mosel region. Within the Green Label collection you'll find an off-dry Riesling (the one featured here), a dry Riesling, and a sparkling Riesling.
About Deinhard Green Label Riesling
The Deinhard Green Label Riesling yells typicity. There is no mistaking it for anything other than Riesling. With an inviting golden hue and aromas of apple, pear, and orange blossom, honey immediately leads to salivating. On the palate a fantastic balance between zippy acidity and honeyd ripe fruit with minerality to boot.
This Riesling is a great food wine and will sing with anything above the 10,000 Scoville scale. Trust me!
The Deinhard Green Label Riesling can be found at the LCBO for $11.95 in the generalist section and in my opinion is beyond a steal.
