LCBO Find: Lavradores de Feitoria Tres Bagos Reserva Tinto 2016

Updated: Oct 13

One of the things I love about Portuguese wines is their ability to provide such versatile showings in your glass, and all at a price that supports curiosity and trying a wine or a grape for the very first time. This is the case with today's 'wine find'.

The Lavradores de Feitoria Três Bagos Reserva Tinto 2016 is a blend of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo). These grapes combined provide a depth in mouthfeel that is truly memorable.

About Lavradores de Feitoria

Established in the year 2000, Lavradores de Feitoria is a collaborative venture that unites 15 producers across 19 quintas in the renowned Douro Valley of Portugal. This initiative aims to create balanced and elegant wines that reflect the region's unique terroirs, specifically the Baixo Corgo, Cima Corgo, and Douro Superior subregions.

With over 600 hectares of vineyards, Lavradores de Feitoria has garnered a reputation for producing wines with excellent aging potential, embodying both tradition and innovation.

The winery's commitment to quality is evident in its diverse portfolio, which includes a range of whites, reds, and rosés that are celebrated for their freshness and fruit-forward profiles.

About Três Bagos Reserva Tinto 2016

If you are familiar with the grapes used in this blend, you will recognize that they can all produce big wines, but I guarantee you that both the winemaking and the age of this wine, makes it highly palatable, and also one that can age.

All of the grapes used to make this wine come from vines at least 30 years old, which helps provide some intensity in the berries. This wine was aged in both stainless steel and oak to further provide a depth in aroma and flavour (50% in stainless steel, 25% in new French oak barrels and 25% in 2-year French oak barrels for 12 months).

On colour, you will be greeted with a wine that is deep ruby. On the nose, aromas of red plum, currant and a bouquet of flowers that bring fresh rose cuttings to mind are recognized. Lastly, on the palate, ripe red and black fruit play a noticeable and appreciated role. Bright acidity and structured tannins are also present, but given the wine's age, the tannins are smooth on the palate.

The Três Bagos Reserva Tinto 2016 is a balanced and carefully structured wine that, in my opinion, is beyond great value for money. This wine can be found at the LCBO for $17.95 in the vintages section.
